Wow, Rachel, I’m afraid we didn’t feast anywhere near as well on our recent trip to Barcelona, though we did sample the Spanish tortilla, patatas bravas and other tapas you mentioned. Obviously it just gives me more reason to want to return. Thanks for an excellent vicarious food tour! My mouth is watering.
We actually had them a couple of times because they were one of our favorite dishes on a previous visit. At one spot not far from our hotel, they were really good, just what we were expecting, while at another they were disappointing, not hot or crispy enough, with an aioli that seemed more like barely spiked American mayo. Obviously it depends on the place or maybe the day. The first time I sampled them at a bar in Madrid, they knocked my socks off. Don’t think I’ve ever had any quite as good since then, but it could be that food in memory tastes better!😆
I'm glad you at least had a good one! And yes, food memories do colour things a lot -- I was relieved that both tortillas we had were as good as remember... eating one for breakfast in a vineyard in Rioja was my first ever one, so it's an easy food memory to romanticise!
Heroic feasting on an epic scale! Thanks for the abundant tips. In a similar vein, you might like Substack https://thekateadventure.substack.com/. She was an F1 journalist but now writes a food/travel blog.
Thanks I'll check her out! And it was quite epic - quite good having J's parents with us for the F1 related leg of the trip as when it's small plates, it means you get to try more with more people!
I hope these recommendations come in handy! A few more tips: if you use Uber you need to enter your passport details to ride, and never choose the taxi through Uber option, they never arrive go for the second more executive version for a pick up. Also, for Sagrada Familia get your tickets online 3 weeks ahead as they sell out about 2 weeks ahead. And get Park Guell a few days before too!

What did you think of your patatas bravas? I still can't get over how disappointed we were by them!
