And great roundup, as usual! Thanks for pointing me to Kara’s article on recipe testing, which sounds equal parts fun and exhausting. I also really liked her take on apple picking and completely relate to the misconceptions about people who were born and raised in rural areas.
Kara, honestly I'm LOVING your newsletter at the moment. Only a recent discovery, but I could have shared so many more in this roundup. I loved your piece on chiles - I've done SO much research on them recently, and they're not really a thing we get here.
Aw, thank you so much! Chiles are so fascinating, aren't they? If you haven't come across it yet, highly recommend Peppers of the Americas by Maricel Presilla — loads of chile history/migration/etc. And recipes!
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll bookmark that if I ever return to the topic, though it was a sad one for research when I could not try any of them myself!
Still loving all the writing! And I know. I've never really 'got' it either (but I grew up living rural, and almost still do) but it was another thing to consider having it spelled out in her brilliant piece like that.
I'm aware of it, but I don't think I've ever tried one - it is not something that really shows up either in British grocery stores or farmers markets. I know you can order the seeds online though, so perhaps something to grow at some point! I've seen some delicious recipes for them roasted halved and stuffed.
I think it has been a particular bad year for squash in the Western climate - I've heard this from a lot of people! My Mum managed a few tiny butternut but none of mine, or my mini pumpkins I's planned on roasting whole did anything more than constantly flower...
Thanks so much for the shoutout, Rachel!

Thank you for the links! Enjoying reading through all the other great pieces, too :)

Thanks so much for the links, Rachel ❤️ I’m dying over Kara’s apple picking piece! I never really got it either, and thought I was the only one!

Fabulous roundup, Rachel!
Thanks Jolene!
Does honeynut squash ever show up on your radar?

They are delicious! Doesn't show up here in the U.S. much. I ordered seeds and grew a bunch of nothing. Gonna try again next season!

Sorry to hear!
I now have 4 new tabs open, which I'll read with lunch today - thanks or the great roundup!
Happy reading!
