This was such an informative post on plums! There are always tons of varieties in fruit shops here but I never really knew much about the different kinds (other than Greengage, I guess since they’re so distinctive). I have to say that the idea of biting into a plum and finding a wasp inside is mildly terrifying haha. Although it’s probably worth the hassle of checking the fruit for the tradeoff of having a plum tree at home!

Rachel, this is a beautiful - visually as well as the words - tribute to plums and your just departed Queen. Everyone’s thoughts are on the UK right now. God Save the Queen and King. As for Damsons, they were a big part of the pie and jam making a generation before me. My grandmother used to make her own Damson plum preserves and spread it on toast, people would make jelly roll cakes and spread the preserves inside or a custard pie with a layer of the preserves. And they would come into the marketplace in September. But I have not seen them in years, which makes me sad. And your post made me want to get back to England!

Thank you Anne. And that is lovely, but such a shame they're becoming less common. I always make the preserves as I love the Bonne Maman version you can get in France so much, where they must be more common. I do like them in a classic jam tart, too!

Possibly I can order it? Thank you, Rachel!

You should be able to! Though the one with the label in French I've found is subtly different to the one on shelves here.
